Four years ago, I embarked upon an epic journey.
Okay, maybe not epic, but it was long, that's for sure.
I went on 100 dates with (almost) 100 guys in an effort to better understand dating and relationships.
When it was done, I had a new perspective. Not just on boys, but nearly everything in my life.
It was the first big project I ever undertook, and completing it meant a lot to me. It's one of the things that got me kick-started on writing, blogging, and organizing the random thoughts floating through my brain.
Lately, I've felt like I needed another one of those life-changing challenges.
I wasn't sure what exactly my challenge could be, and then today--it hit me.
Working with the public, you run into your share of rude people. The past few weeks, however, have been particularly snarky. I find myself running into abrasive people everywhere, and not just at work. It seems like everywhere I go, I'm bombarded by nasty comments, harsh tones, and a general edge all around.
I would complain more about it, but I find myself feeling like maybe I have no room to talk. After all, I'm sarcastic and bitchy by nature. I'm always ready with a quip about how someone's dressed, their intelligence, or how they behave.
Maybe I'm putting the same negativity into the world that I've been wishing would go away?
I'm thinking that's a big 'Yes.'
Here's my plan:
Starting August 1st, I will be...nice...for one hundred days.
I'll blog about it as often as possible, and I'll see if being a "nice" person is really all it's cracked up to be.
When I was in school, all I ever wanted to be was that nice guy that everybody liked. As I got older, I looked down on people like that. I saw them as doormats. They seemed bland and boring, and I decided I liked my bitchy ways.
So the question is--
Can you be nice and still be interesting? Can you be nice and still be the life of a party? If you're nice and someone's ripping you apart, are you just being a doormat? Where's the line between standing up for yourself and being a jerk?
I plan on finding all this out, and hopefully more.
Oh, and I'm bringing along a Friend from the old 100 Dates blog.
Starting this August, I'm a brand new man--
--and a bitch no more.
